Food Sovereignty Movement commemorates Human Rights Day; Decries government attacks on peasant rights

As the world commemorates the International Human Rights Day on December 10, the National Movement for Food Sovereignty (NMFS) decries the embattled state of peasant rights in the Philippines. The NMFS asserts that the rights of the Filipino smallholder food producers are perpetually under attack by the policies of the national government. This is in spite of the UN Declaration enshrining the rights of all individuals to a life of dignity.

“The rights of Filipino peasants and other food producers in the rural areashave been continuously trampled upon. The policies of previous administrations which sought to liberalize, deregulate, and privatize local agriculture all serve as proof of the government’s callousness to the rights of our farmers and other food producers.It cannot be stressed enough that theseneoliberal policies haveresulted in the exacerbation of rural poverty and hunger”said NMFS spokesperson Jhun Pascua.
