Makilala, Cotabato – June 26, 2025 — In a proactive step towards sustainable farming and improved livelihoods, the Sanvicofa Marketing Cooperative Farmers gathered at their San Vicente office in Makilala for a one-day Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Training. This initiative is part of the cooperative’s ongoing commitment to developing its coconut farming areas and increasing income, aligned with its Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
With the challenges of climate change threatening the productivity of traditional agriculture, SANVICOFA farmers are now taking a bold shift toward climate-resilient practices. The training focused on the core principles of climate-smart agriculture, designed to help farmers adapt to changing weather patterns, increase yields, and reduce their environmental footprint.
The event was facilitated by three seasoned Farmer Leaders and two technical staff from the Integrated Rural Development Foundation (IRDF). Participants were guided through a mix of lectures and hands-on demonstrations on how to create organic concoctions and climate-smart fertilizers — cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions that improve soil health and crop resilience without relying on expensive chemical inputs.
“Dili lang ni para sa among kaugalingon,” shared one farmer-participant. “Gusto pud namo nga ang umaabot nga henerasyon makatilaw gihapon og maayo nga ani gikan sa mas malungtarong pamaagi.” (“This is not just for ourselves,” shared one farmer-participant. “We also want the next generation to experience a good harvest through more sustainable practices.”)
The sessions also highlighted how these organic solutions can be made using readily available farm resources, making them sustainable and accessible for smallholder farmers. This training marks a vital step toward equipping farmers with the tools and knowledge to thrive in an unpredictable climate while protecting the environment.
SANVICOFA’s initiative reflects a broader movement within the agricultural sector — one that values innovation, environmental stewardship, and community empowerment. By investing in trainings like this, the cooperative isn’t just aiming to improve coconut productivity; it is building a resilient farming community that can serve as a model for others.
As the day drew to a close, farmers left the training not only with new skills but also with renewed confidence and a sense of purpose. With continued support from partners like IRDF, SANVICOFA farmers are poised to lead the way in sustainable coconut farming in Region XII.
